A few weeks ago Gartner – a renowned market research company published the new version of its annual report “Magic Quadrant for Business Intelligence and Analytics Platforms”. The report is quite comprehensive and worth reading in detail by anyone who keeps an eye on the BI industry. But, if you’re short on time and just want to know what the key BI trend is, here it is – analysis is evolving from descriptive to diagnostic.
Traditional BI approach with reporting on top was mainly focused on data visualizations that describe business in terms of measures and dimensions. At the same time Gartner increasingly sees more organizations building diagnostic-style analytics, which implies more interactive self-learning by users. This trend is in line with growth and popularization of the BI niche which was first called “Data Discovery” in previous Gartner’s reports, with QlikView, Tableau and Spotfire being notable trend-setters in this niche, making even traditional BI vendors react with somewhat similar offerings. And, it looks like Bardess made a right bet on data discovery consultancy, offering customers all three BI suites mentioned above as well as Birst, which was praised in Gartner’s report for having high momentum which led to placing Birst in the Challengers quadrant and receiving the unofficial title of the “new darling” of the Magic Quadrant (like Tableau and QlikView before it).
